Drum Lesson #2 – Your First Drum Beat – How To Start Playing Drums | PMT College

hello welcome to PMT College my name's
Russ Tarly from drumheadz.co.uk and today we're going to be learning our
first drum beat so we're going to be looking at some steps on how we can
build that rhythm up now there's quite a lot going on in that rhythm so we need
to break it down into a slightly simpler rhythm one that we see quite regularly
anyway but it's a little bit easier to play and that's like this to play that
rhythm first of all we need to make sure we can play the high hat and the bass
drum at the same time so that's what I'd like you to do first is try and play the
bass drum and the high hat at the same time and also say one one when you're
comfortable with that we need to be able to play the hi-hat and the snare drum at
the same time and this time say two two and when you're happy with that we need
to be able to go between those two beats between one and two without any
hesitations so this is where we need to take things real slow take our time be
patient think about what we're going to play next before we play it one two one
two one-two-one in our modern music we
generally play to music that's in a 4/4 time signature which essentially means
that there are four beats in a bar so in most music that we listen to we would
count one two three four one two three four so if we take the two beats that we
were playing one and two and repeat them but then count three and four that will
give us one whole bar of that groove in a 4/4 time signature one two three four
one two three four the most important thing you can do at this stage is go
slow and take your time the slower you go the quicker you're learning if we go
a little bit too quick at this stage we're likely to get in a little bit of a
muddle so things that we don't want to do is play three things at the same time
accidentally or we don't want the hi-hat all the snare drum to what's called
slamming so that would look like this all between the high hat and the bass
drum we want to do our best to try and line up the high hat and the bass drum
so they're nice and tight together and the same with the snare drum and the
hi-hat now that's what practice is all about we're not just going to sit down
and it's going to sound amazing straight away so now we know what to do
we can spend our time and practice this so eventually it's going to sound nice the next thing that we want to be able
to do is when we're comfortable playing our rhythm is to take the tempo or speed
up very slightly and again once you're comfortable with that tempo you can take
the speed up just a little quicker okay taking that rhythm and moving on to the
next step would be to add an extra hi-hat in between those beats that we've
just played so we're going to slow everything down again and when we play
an extra hi-hat in between those beats we're going to call it and so we're
actually going to say one and two and three and four and so now we can add the
bass drum and snare drum to our high hats on beats one two three and four as
we did before now again we're going to go really slowly just so we can get the
notes lined up in order and we can get the coordination of the correct limbs
lining up at the same time one and two and three and four and if you can get
that far you're doing fantastic you're doing great that's a lot of information
and that's a lot of things to take on board when you're just starting out so
again take your time go slow use your voice count the numbers one and two and
three and four and as you work through it and see if you can get the rhythm to
come back round on itself so you can try and play it in a
continuous fashion make that a goal and a challenge for you
to practice a work on being able to play that rhythm four times comfortably one
and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one and two
and three and four and one and two and three and four and once you're
comfortable playing that rhythm nice and slow
four times round and round we can start to increase the tempo just get it a
little bit quicker so there we have it there's our standard eighth note rock
groove that's pretty much the foundational rhythm that we find across
today's modern music that can be applied to rock hip-hop funk R&B dance music
everything that we listen to is generally going to come from that
foundational rhythm so in the next lesson we're going to be looking at some
popular bass drum patterns to make our rhythms a little bit more varied and
interesting thank you for watching really hope you found this lesson useful
