Drumming Game and Play-Along – I Can Drum at Home

Hi, I'm Suzanne Fassett Wright and I am here
with Chautauqua Institution, and we are doing these "I Can Drum at Home" videos
for you to enjoy and drum along, as many of you have drummed with us in class. This
video is growing on Brian's video – Brian Kushmaul's video – on steady beat. Brian
taught you and showed you how to keep a steady beat on your drums. A nice, even, steady beat. It doesn't change, always stays the same. What you've
learned about steady beat, we can use that steady beat to write a piece of
music . We are going to write a 32-beat piece of music that has little sections
of eight counts each and in this piece of music, we're going to use different
ways to hit the drum – different hands to hit the drum – to create a 32-beat phrase to
go along with a song that we're going to play later for you.

So there are four
counts – four sets of eight counts. Here's the first set of eight counts. We're
going to drum a steady beat with both hands for eight counts. Here's how it
goes. πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Let's do that together. Take both hands and hit eight counts, right with me.
Here we go. Ready, go 🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Pause the video and practice that
on your own if you need to. The next part – our second eight counts – you're going to
use one hand. I'm using my left hand but to you, it may look like my right because
you're facing me. I'm going to use my left hand to hit eight times just like
this: βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Do that with me – here we go. Ready, go βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Okay that was the second part. You can pause the video and practice that on
your own if you like, or we can practice parts one with both hands and parts two
with just our left hand together.

Let's do that now. I'll count you in,
we'll start with both hands together. Ready, go 🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Good. Again, if you need to, pause the video and practice putting those two parts together. Part three – We use our other hand. This is my right hand, it may it look like my left to you from
where you're watching, but this is my right hand. I'm going to use that to hit
eight times. It'll sound and look just like this: βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Let's do that together – here we go: Ready, go βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ If you need to, pause the video and
practice just your right hand by itself. We can now practice the first three
parts all together. Hands together – left hand – right hand – each for eight counts.
Let's do it together – here we are.

Ready, go 🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯
βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Great! Pause the video if you need to to work on that
on your own, or rewind to do it again with me.
The last part this is the most fun part. It looks a lot like the first part but
our eighth count's a little different. Watch me and listen – here is
how it'll sound. πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ And when we say "eight," we throw our hands up in the air, cuz this is the end.

Watch me I'll do it again: πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Great! Let's do that together, let's do that together. So just that last part – part four we throw our hands up in the air let's do that
together – here we go. Ready, go πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ Very good. If you need to, pause the video, go back, review – but right now I'm gonna do all four parts together. All one – part one
with two hands, part two with my left hand, part three with my right hand and
part four with both hands, with a "Hey" or an "Eight" at the end. Here we go: 1, 2, ready, go: 🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯
βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ That's fun – its gonna be more fun when we put it together with music. So if you need to, pause the video, feel comfortable going through all four
of those together and then we're going to put them together with a song here in
just a minute. Hi! This is my husband Nick Wright, and
Nick is joining me because we're going to play some music that we can do that
32 count, eight beat rhythm pattern that we just learned earlier in the video.
We're going to be using songs that we used actually in our drumming class.

We
used the Beatles "Ob-La-di, Ob-La-da" for this particular game in the classroom
and we thought that we would do our version of it.
NIck and I are gonna sing, he's gonna play guitar, I'm gonna drum and we encourage
you to join us with the 32 count 8 beat drum game. I will count you in – I'll say "1
2 ready go," and we'll start doing exactly what we did just before. Take it away! 🎡 🎸 🎡🎸 1, 2, ready, go! 🎡🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯πŸŽ΅ πŸŽ΅βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ 🎡 🎡🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯πŸŽ΅ πŸŽ΅βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ 🎡 🎡🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯πŸŽ΅ πŸŽ΅βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ 🎡 🎡🀲πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯πŸŽ΅ πŸŽ΅βœ‹πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯ πŸ™Œ πŸ₯ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 πŸ₯πŸŽ΅ Suzanne: Hey! (laughter) Thanks Nick, that was a lot of fun! We
hope that you had fun singing and drumming along with us, and we hope you
go back and watch the video, drum along with us again, and we'll see you in our
next video. Bye!.

Drumming Game and Play-Along - I Can Drum at Home

This video is a part of the β€œI Can Drum at Home” series, with video lessons developed by Brian Kushmaul, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra Principal Percussionist, and Suzanne Fassett Wright, Director of Arts Education. Filmed by the musicians in the videos on their phones post-NYS "Pause," each is based on the curriculum presented in the CI School Residencies program. These videos are intended for use with young students new to hand drumming to explore musical expression. Kids and adults can drum together along with these basic lessons, using household items such as a bowl, a cardboard box, the floor or a lap. So – pull up a chair, find something to drum on, and join in the fun!

If you like, use the closed captioning feature to guide your interaction - there are emoticons to guide you through the activities and help you as you learn this drumming pattern.

This VSA program is presented in 2019-2020 under contract with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
