Drumming Without Drums [Part 2]

Hi guys, I'm Ben. It's the second part of
drumming without drums. This time we're going to talk about 8th notes. BUT
before we continue, do hit the subscribe button below and the notification icon –
so you're notified of all my future videos. In the last video we played a
simple drum beat which sounded something like this…. Your lead hand was playing the
four 1/4 notes which sound like this 1, 2, 3, 4 The bass drum was on beats 1 and
3. ONE, two, THREE, four and your snare drum, your left hand, was on beats 2 and
4. one, TWO, three, FOUR. what we're going to do now is going to take it one step
further and we're going to add 1/8th notes to
the pattern. 1/8th notes are a subdivision of 1/4 notes. In order to
count 1/8th notes, we are now going to put an AND in between the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4. so we get; 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & You could count it 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 but, it's easier to say 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & You hear the 1/4 notes, so the ands are
the offbeat eighth notes.

Now, we're going to introduce this to the pattern. your right hand and your right foot will be on beat 1. Your right hand (only) will
be on the AND of 1. So, together that's 1 AND. We continue this process with each
number. 2, is going to be your two hands together. The AND is just your right hand. So 2 AND is this – 3 AND is just the same as 1 AND Your foot and your right hand
together. 3. Your right hand on its own plays the AND Beat 4, is your two
hands together AND is now your right hand on its own. So
nice and slowly follow me, here it goes. ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND 4 AND Let's do that one more time. ONE AND 2 AND THREE AND 4 AND one
and two and three and four and. Remember to count out loud whilst you play. It will make it so much easier; you'll learn a lot quicker
just follow the numbers and the ANDs one and two and three and four and one and
two and three and four and now if you're left-handed, your left hand
will be the lead hand and your left foot will be the bass drum or the kick drum
so that your left foot now is on beat one and three your two hands are still
the same they're on two and four but your left hand will be playing all of
the1/8th notes which will be ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND.

Let's try
that. Left foot and your left hand on beat one. ONE AND, wIll be your left hand. TWO, two hands together AND THREE will be left hand left foot. AND we'll be just
the left hand. FOUR wIll be two hands together. And the AND will be your left
hand. Let's try that. ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND. ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND. This is a fun exercise and do it for as long as you can. Don't stop
if you make a mistake, carry on. Trust the numbers, they'll help
you through. So one more time for luck. Right handed. ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND. Left handed. ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND ONE AND TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AND.

Go practice. Have some fun with
it. Put on your favorite tunes and play
along with it. Thanks for watching my video. If you want to know more check out
