Djembe Lesson: Sliding Solo Phrases In Fives

I've done a couple of other videos on what I call sliding solo phrases that's a type of polyrhythm where instead of the phrase is sticking to the kind of beats of the rhythm you'll play where they kind of slide away from that and that normally means playing in three is over a four rhythm or something like that those ones I've done previously I'm going to just show you a slightly different form today and these are solo phrases that work in fives and that might sound horrific ly complicated actually if you've played if you've done West African drumming even for a little while you'll have come across the signal which at the signal but a signal the most common one standard for for signal goes boom we're just going to take that for the moment okay but purple that actually forms the basis of some solo phrases so instead of now playing it just in tones like I would for a signal now I'm going to play the flam with slaps and the two nights after on times yes and now we're going to go now the interesting thing about that phrase is if we start to repeat it it's actually working in fives okay so now we're going to go thank Google grant cookin grant cooking that's playing for three of them together with a pulse again you're here instead of sticking on instead of going clang cuckoo Clank oh cool Clank oh cool which would be really boring right it's going to move away from that pulse so come on cook Coons come on cook cool cry cuckoo it hits the pulse in a different place every time so if we play three of those we get a count myself in four four we go one two three four grant gun and you can also see that if I were to carry on and it would move around the pulse in different ways actually because it's in fives it would be a really long cycle before it meets up yeah if anyone's really into maths find the common denominator of fives and falls or something like that right they'll meet up at some distant point in the future but if I keep playing it it goes like this from signal I made a mistake in there it's hard to follow because it's in fives but it makes a really good sliding face over there and some dun dun accompaniment I could play that same thing you're gonna hear how it works we've done doing accompaniment and how it moves away and around the pulse and a very simple thing can become very beautiful when repeated again and again okay so the same phrase in fives over I for four done Dan Patten and can we please use low low I use low low and Joe lay a lot basically just because they simple four-four rhythms it's easy for you to hear the pulse yeah you can do it with other rhythms as well obviously ready Zoe okay that's a stick you know it slides away and I can do long sequences short sequences and just loop them in different ways to make a really nice interesting solo just using that element you know you can do the same thing off the bases instead of going it works equally well excellent thanks and then of course you can pick any phrase you like in fives now we don't really normally know many phrases in five so I'm going to give you one really simple way to approach this playing in fives is to play four notes and leave a space right because four plus one is thank you so the genius or Zoey so four notes and leave a space right so one two three four gah gah gah gah gah gah yeah right got that kata right and then the spiced gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga yeah we're going one two three four one two three four one two three four one two three four one two three four and that you're gonna see how that's gonna move around the pulse okay so firstly we're just my foot I'm just with my bells please I mean so I'll give myself a I count myself for actually so one two three four you go hard to hear like that but if we put it with London's we can hear how it moves away and this time instead of just playing on snaps or tones I'll probably vary a little bit as well okay sorry from signal solo phrases sliding solo phrases in fives enjoy
