DARBUKALOG (1. Bölüm) – Sıfırdan İleri Seviyeye Darbuka Dersleri

Hello friends. Welcome to our first lesson. I'm Mert. Begining from today within Monte Workshop we will teaching goblet drum lessons together. Goblet drum is known as Dümbelek in colloquial language in generally. Goblet drum is important. Why is it important? There is a rhythm when you review the music. Isn't it? There is also rhythm in the life. Somehow, you move on in this rhythm with this rhythm. You walk in a rhythm even in traffic. When you go somewhere or look at the clock Rhythm controls almost everything.

For example, there is rhythm in human pulse. In short, goblet drum is a rhythm instrument. I mean, rhythm instruments such as; drum, cajon, tambourine, bandir, goblet drum and others keeps the song in a certain rhythm, literally it controls the song. Firstly, i want to talk about that generally what kind of goblet drums used in Turkey, what are the raw materials and what is made of? This goblet drum you have seen in my hand is a iron-casting goblet drum. Additionally, terra cotta goblet drums and coper goblet drums is generally used in Turkey. There are two kid of goblet drums as bass goblet drum and solo goblet drums. This goblet drum is a solo goblet drum Generally, it has high-pitched sound. Mostly, used in solo part of songs, in fasils. The bass goblet drum is also used in many songs. Mostly used in backing track to support solo goblet drums. It has bass voice. What will i say? What should i say? This goblet durb… What is the goblet durb? Huh? What is it? If you watch this video, you already have a goblet drum but, I want to say this to people without goblet drum or people which want to buy a goblet drum.

Why did i choose this goblet drum. Because it is a beginner level goblet drum. You can buy this from any music store for 150 TL or 200 TL. My other purpose of choosing this is that, i will play, you will listen, try to play with me because of this goblet drum, the difference in sounds between us will be less. So you will learn more comfortably and understand how i play.

Goblet drum brands are important. I mean, if you play cheaper goblet drums, you will get worse sounds. If you play high quality and expensive goblet drums, naturally you will get better sounds. It's true on any music instruments. If you buy higher class guitar, you will get better tones. If you buy higher class clarinet, you will get better sounds. But this goblet drum is adequate for beginning level. Sure, financially limited people can use screwed goblet drums.

Important thing is, understand the purpose of goblet drum, upgrade the rhythm skills and musical ear and recognize the sounds of goblet drum. In the following lessons, i will go on with higher quality goblet drum. The most common problem faced by people starting to play goblet drum is tuning the goblet drum. "Why i can't get good sounds from my goblet drum?" "Is my goblet drum faulty?" "Some sounds of my goblet drum are awful" These are some complaints. If you have a goblet drum, you should have an allen wrench. These are screw parts of goblet drum for tunning. It's the allen wrench. Let me show you for people which don't know. We can tune the goblet drum by the help of this allen wrench.

By the help of this allen wrench, You can tune the goblet drum bye loosening of tightening up the clips. Because this allen wrench is faulty. It's shitty, not good enough. (laughing) When loosening the screws by the help of allen wrench, sound of goblet drum becomes bass. When tightening the screws in opposite direction, sound of goblet drum becomes high-pitced. Sure, this tunning will vary according to the your songs and stages. Firstly, we are loosening the screws for bass sounds, in these screw parts. You need to be careful when you loosen the screws, you can break the inside screw connections. It's better not to poke too much. When tightening the screws, you shouldn't tighten too much for not to pruncture or damage the leather of goblet drum. I have loosened the screws already. It has bass sounds at the moment. We are tightening the screws now. Now we have turned the sounds to high-pitched, friends. We are tunning the goblet drum according to our music style and personal plesure. But one of the important point is tightening each screw equally. Thus, our goblet drum's tone is balanced. (a old turkish song) I'm passing the spesific details, friends.

The important thing is being able to play the goblet drum. For being able to play goblet drum, i continue the lesson by showing how to grip the goblet drum. Right-handed people put the goblet drum on the left knee, put the left arms on the goblet drum and use right hands like this. Left-handed people exact opposite, put the goblet drum on the right knee, put the right arms on the goblet drum and use left hands like this. I'm a right-handed person so i grip the goblet drum in this direction. Goblet drum has 2 sounds. These are "Dum" and "Tek" Sure, it has varied combination. In these combinations we may get different sounds, but our primary goal is that "How do we get and use "Dum" and "Tek" sounds" For getting "Dum" sound, hit middle of the goblet drum with our fingers like this. Not hold your hand on it after hitting, get your hand back. Hit and get back, hit and get back. Of course, you won't do this immediately, and will say: "I can't get this sound!" I'm showing this on the beginner level goblet drum like yours for you.

You may not to do. It's normal. But important thing is practising and catching true sound. Generally, we get the "Tek" sounds with our left hands. It has varied combination, but the sound should be like this. Its tone should be like this but, we are using this technique: forefinger and ring finger of our left hands. We will get the "Tek" sounds by using both of them. How do we get? We put our left hands on the goblet drum and put our wrists too.

Firstly, we are rising our hands and hitting by forefinger, then ring finger. forefinger, ring finger forefinger, ring finger. I'm especially telling you again friends, you may not get good sounds, you may get dirty sounds. It may not be. But we will try to get optimum sound with practices. Of course, you all have different professions, you are working in various jobs. Some of you are playing goblet drum as a hobby, some of you are playing to get this job. I recommend the practice at least two and half or two hours daily to people which want to improve goblet drum skills. But if you don't have that much time, you can practice 1 hour daily. Important thing is to practice slowly and accurately, not fast. It's important to keep principles permenant. After that we can play fast. We showed "Dum" and "Tek" We showed "Dum" forefinger, ring finger "Dum", forefinger and ring finger, ""Dum", forefinger and ring finger.

I want you to practice like this. I told you about these "Dum" and "Tek" voices but, There may be some curious and avid people among you. "How are the "Trrr" sounds formed, master?" or "We hear "Dum Trr" sounds. How we get these?" "Trr" sounds are combinations of "Tek" sound in different ways. We will talk about these sounds in following lesson. This lesson has "Dum" "Tek" and "Tek" sounds. (singing "Dum Tek Tek" song performed by Hadise in 2009 Eurovision) Look, wait a minute! We are at the end of this lesson, friends. Don't forget to practice, subscribe and turn on notifications. (laughing).
