Djembe Drum Care : Djembe Drum Care: Maintenance

So to maintain your drum there's not so much
you need to do. If, if you play your drum regularly you shouldn't have to worry about
your drum drying out because the oils in your hands will get on the skin and keep it in
good shape. If you're going to be away for a long period of time, a friend of ours goes
away for the winter and he comes back every spring, and his, the head of his drum is broken.
You can prevent that by loosening it, just you can take out a couple of knots.

He also
leaves it usually in front of a window, not the best place. So at least put something
over the head of your drum, you can use a sheet or a sarong or something just to cover
the head. The, the, the head does like dry weather, if it's really humid your head's
going to, it's going to sound a little different. The wood doesn't necessarily like to be in
the direct sun so playing your drum is the best thing you can do for it. Also if you
fly in an airplane you want to loosen the skin quite a bit because the altitude changes
and it's just very dry so we recommend really loosening your drum. You might want to go
almost as loose as that really flappy headed drum was just to be on the safe side.
