John Longstreth – Hand-Technique Lesson | Drum-Technique Academy

we are switching from the foot technique
to the hand technique Bram: hi John how did you develop your hand speed and
endurance where there any specific exercises you did to get to this level
so I would just start how would you start doing that kind of stuff and just
so you know it's like I didn't really know how to do much more than you know
there didn't want it you know Mike Heller came along taught me 6 stroke
roll I used that but it's just a lot of it had to do with Mike Mangini
what I was doing for a while is I don't know if I was getting it right but I was
not using any fingers I would just sit at home with a pillow and just do this
all wrist action had this open I was stripping on this joint here the outer
most joint boom boom just keeping the fingertips there on the stick so I was
getting this thing and this is what I think develop a lot of rips I was doing
this a lot on I never played drums like this but I would do this on a pillow or
a practice pad and then just that kind of moderate tempo and this was all like
whoo you know yeah eventually loosen up and I got this really nice kind of four
fingered open thing yes kind of somewhere between a French grip and a
sorry one thing I have to interrupt you shortly because like you're the first
one here who talks about Mike Mangini and does it the right way because
the way you grip the stick it's like that switch from doubles the singles along with that that so that has been
one of my one of my favorite exercises lately I've been working on unisons into
alternating flam's but feet and hand exercises something
that kind of lift it from Thomas lang okay yeah so it's that but I'm flipping
it and this is a fun one because as you are new to Brazilian Jujitsu you'll
discover how important this core strength yes that you're gonna develop in doing
in doing any kind of any kind of a really any kind of workout but like
fight training specifically where you have to specifically engage your core
and know how to engage your core without stiffening your limbs yep so this is a
really good one this works the guts and it works the knees and everything is nice so that's a good one that that's
like that's what I try and do when I get on stage my sound I'll ask her kick
drums yeah then he'll ask forsen air I know he's gonna need the snare in
conjunction with the kick drum so there's a lot of that on stage like just
getting just getting the the sounds to work
