yes hello friends matt burns here and
in this video i'm going to show you 10 popular drum patterns to get your songs started
there's a midi pack in the description containing all the patterns in this video download
it and start using them in your own music before i start guys i want to remind you
to stick around because later on i'm going to reveal my favorite groove it'll
make any song like the best song ever you're the best around all right guys let's get
into it pattern number one four on the floor this groove is everywhere four on the floor was
the defining groove of the disco era and since the late 1970s it's spread across multiple genres
think of songs like bad guy by billy eilish break my heart by doualipa and miss you by the rolling
stones it works extremely well because it's super effective at a variety of tempos the quarter note
kick pattern makes this a total dance groove and who doesn't like to dance right i'm looking at
you 1984 george michael number two the trap beat this pattern has been used by trap artists going
back to the 90s but today it's worked its way into the very dna of mainstream pop it's featured
in songs like old town road by little nos x rock star by the baby and 24s by ti this pattern
is commonly programmed around 140 beats per minute the sporadic hi-hat subdivisions in a heavily
syncopated kick drum pack a lot of angst it'll definitely influence whatever instrumentation you
decide to layer on top of it pattern number three is called the bow diddly beat buddingly boatedly
boatedly boatingly guys this beat is so much fun it's called the bow diddly beat because it was
originally featured in the song hey bo diddly by the artist beau diddley boatedly votedly
votedly buddly nowadays it's most often used to evoke a throwback type of vibe think of songs
like valerie by amy winehouse american girl by tom petty and faith by george michael this groove
works really well at moderate to slow tempos the foundation of this groove rhythmically speaking
is the 3-2 son clave originating in afroqib music pattern number four is the two beat it's one it's called the two beat but really
it's just one idea here's the thing i mean wow who would have thought you got a kick
and then you got a snare and then you just repeat that and you get yourself a little groove there
bud the two beat has been featured in the weekends blinding lights you make my dreams come true
by hall notes and wagon wheel by darius rucker this groove works well at medium and up tempos
it has a danceable quality and can be programmed or played easily it's not flashy but it gets
straight to the point which most of the time is exactly what you need okay number
five the super fast punk beat yeah no no no we won't listen we won't do the punk beat
16 year old me would have wanted this groove on every song but unfortunately in 2020 doesn't
make the cut moving on number five boom bap boom bap producers sample beats
like this from old vinyl records a huge staple of 90s hip-hop boom-bap beats are
still used today you'll hear them on songs like method man by wu-tang clan bugging out by tribe
called quest and new york state of mind by knox these beats are characterized by 16th note
kick and snare patterns and they have a slight swing feel to them as a result they work really
well at medium tempo these grooves are so raw that it'll instantly draw in the listener and
have them vibing pattern number six the dembo i'm sure you know this one after the first two
seconds of hearing it it was originally introduced on the song dembao by jamaican artist shabba ranks you'll probably recognize it on songs like
desposito by louise fonzie ed sheeran's shape of you and savage love by jason darillo and josh 685.
it works well at medium tempos the dem bow pattern plays off of what we call the tercio rhythm which
is groups of three three and two one two three one two three one two one two three one two three one
two this is a really short pattern and it's very repetitive it's great option for a dance tune
if you want to try a groove without a backbeat as promised guys here is my favorite
groove number seven impeach the president this pattern was originally sampled from the
1973 song impeach the president by the honey dreamers that's the real name i'm not making this
stuff up not trying to be topical that's i swear that's the actual name of this song you'll hear
it sampled in songs like my house by flowrider you learn by alanis morissette and even hinted
at and all the good girls go to hell by billy eilish drummers love this groove so i may be
biased in saying so but like this really is the perfect beat it has some texture thanks to
the open hi-hat it has a little bit of swing a little bit of syncopation come on it's also
straightforward enough that it can be used in many different styles at a wide range of tempos
number eight this group is called iconic eighths this is one of the grooviest grooves to ever
groove that's anthony's joke there you go good job anthony you'll find it in watermelon sugar by
harry styles my ex's best friend by machine gun kelly and honky tonk woman by the rolling stones
at medium to slow tempos you can really feel the space between the kick drums this type of
rhythmic syncopation creates anticipation in the music and it encourages the listener to do the
head bob hey all right yeah look at us yeah cool yeah look at us having fun right that's
what it's all about this next pattern is a special one it has the potential to make
songs feel very emotional check it out guys you've officially entered the house
of triplets congratulations oh gosh i'm just so proud of you think of slow ballads
like if i ain't got you by alicia keys you make me feel like a natural woman by carol king and
greasy mid-tempo tracks like everybody wants to rule the world by tears for fears what drives
this groove home is that you'll be feeling all 12 eighth notes in this bar which gets extremely
epic at slow tempos you make me feel like goodness all right guys this is the last one i'm sure
you're familiar with it it's been around forever the shuffle feel is rooted in jazz and blues music
this is one tough sounding groove think of songs like gold on the ceiling by the black keys black
skinhead by kanye west and pride and joy by stevie ray vaughan that distinct shuffle feel actually
comes from removing the middle triplet which gives you a rolling feel triple triple trip let
trip let it works at a wide range of tempos and even though it's rooted in jazz and blues music
it's found in a variety of genres this is like fun for me to do i i like doing these videos with
