INFO:
Kanin is a Malinke-rhythm created by Mamady Keïta when he was the artistic leader of the National Ballet de Guinea. It was afterwards played by him in one composition, after Denadon. Kanin means friendship and the accompanying song is in Sousou language:

Bayira yo Konko baa yirayo Bayira Konko baa yirayo
Bayira yo Konko baa yirayo I fakhi nakhama ikhuma
Imamkha gbi lenra Bayira Konko baa yirayo

But not that, Konko (name of a boy), but not that;
Pick up that thing that you brought me and get out of here with it!

The increased speed, the swing, and the solo phrases, make the original a very different track than this basic rhythm. Still, I find it a very enjoyable groove to drum along to.

PATTERNS & DRUM-ALONG:
At the beginning of the video there is an introduction and short practise of four separated drum lines that appear in the Kanin rhythm. The tutorial then gives way to the drum-along track, starting with an introduction to how the lines sit in the groove, and then continuing first at slow speed, then medium, and then fast.

SPEEDING UP:
If you feel comfortable with a certain speed and would like to practise faster, you can let the rhythm help you with that. The transitions, "Slow to Medium" and "Medium to Fast", accelerate over 3-4 minutes, to slowly arrive and settle at a new, faster tempo. Just go to the end of the chapter at the tempo you're comfortable with, drum along the transition and see how you hold.

This is a simplified version of the rhythm. As such, solo phrases are not included, micro-timing (swing) is not taken into account, and echauffements are not presented.
